I am new to yoga, what should I expect?

Congratulations! You are at the beginning of a journey that will change your life and bring you so much joy.

As with anything new, be compassionate with yourself and remember that you don’t have to get everything right away. Practising yoga is a lifelong endeavour and learning the basics is crucial as you build a strong practice. We encourage beginners to pace themselves in class and most importantly, establish a regular practice. You do not need to know anything about yoga, just step onto the mat and open yourself up to a new experience.

How many times a week should I practise?

For optimal results in gaining energy, decreasing stress and building a strong, pain-free body, consistency is the key to success.

A practice of 2-3 days per week, if consistent, will create transformation over time.

For life-changing results practice 4-6 days per week.

If you are cross training with other sports then practicing 2-3 times a week would offer great benefit.

I can’t touch my toes – can I still do yoga?

This practice invites you to just be with where you are at in your body in the moment. We encourage you to develop a flexible mind. You don’t need to be physically flexible. All you need is to focus on letting go, sweating, breathing, moving, and respecting where your body is that day. Soon the tension will release and your range of motion will naturally increase.

Remember that the main goal of Power Yoga is to build and maintain physical and spiritual vitality, not to wrap your legs behind your head (although that may occur).

Can I practise when I’m pregnant?

We offer specific classes for pregnancy and they are a wonderful way to maintain yoga practice during pregnancy. We recommend not to start power yoga practice as a beginner when you’re pregnant.

If you had a strong practice before you became pregnant, you may attend regular classes after the first trimester but not during the first three months. We ask you not to practice Slow Flow or Yin Yoga classes at all during your pregnancy: These classes focus more on stretching, which can lead to destabilizing joints in the context of higher levels of the hormone relaxin during pregnancy.

If you do join power yoga classes, please always let your teacher know. You will also be asked to sign a document stating that you are a regular practitioner and that you understand that as with any physical activity, there are risks. Generally, as with any exercise program, the two general rules of thumb are to check with your doctor, and to listen to your own body and heed any warning signs that you are in a danger zone either for injury, overheating or overwork.

Will I lose weight and build a yogic body?

The amazing thing about Power Yoga is that it will completely transform your whole body, mind and spirit. If you need to lose weight, you will. If you need to build muscle, you will. All you need to do is to practise regularly. It all depends on what shift needs to take place in your body to bring it back to its most natural state. Generally, this system of yoga torches calories and awakens every cell in your body.

What should I wear?

You will want to wear clothes that you feel comfortable moving and sweating in. Pretty much what you would wear to work out or run in….minus the socks and shoes.

What do I need?

You will need a yoga mat, towel and bottle of water. You can bring your own or rent mat and towel at the studio. And a smile will take your practice to a whole different dimension!

What are the opening times?

We are open from half an hour before the first class, and leave you time to shower and get ready after the last class in the evening!
