Vitality – Week 2 of 40 Days To Personal Revolution

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.”

Martha Graham

Martha Graham was a leading choreographer – an author writing in the language of movement.

Yet – even for her vitality automatically means more than just physical movement. It means essence, aliveness and change.

There is a belief in our society that we have to go away to rejuvenate, that regular life grinds us down, and getting away for a week to the sun and drinking cocktails with umbrellas perks us up – but what if we could find vitality here, within our everyday lives? What if we could find our own inner cocktail umbrellas whenever we needed them?

Baron Baptise defines vitality as:

“very simply an energy that comes from living a life of enlightened knowledge and action. When we do what we know to be right and true, we are revitalised and renewed right where we live.”

The third and fourth of Baron Baptiste’s Laws relate specifically to Vitality:

Law 3 – Step out of your comfort zone

The easy path leads to the hard life, but the hard path leads to the easy life – Rilke

  • Let go of the things you think you know and try something different.
  • If you want to manifest big things in your life, release the concern for looking good.

When we chose to stay in our comfort zone over growth we get stuck or worse. It is an escape but it is also a stagnation. Our patterns don’t have to go on forever, we can drop yesterday’s limited thinking – and if we don’t – we make the present just like the past.

Basically: If we always do what we’ve always done – we’ll always get what we’ve always got.

Many of us are comfortable wearing our masks – afraid that if people saw our true selves they would reject us. But do we know this is true? Perhaps the real discomfort comes in time when our mask grow tight and the face loses its light – and has never really been seen.

Law 4 – Commit to Growth

He turns not back who is bound to a star – Leonardo da Vinci

  • Commit to generating your highest intention, no matter how uncomfortable the situation.
  • Be disciplined in your commitment.

This is about making commitments to our higher good and sticking to them even when we feel uncomfortable.

An older Cherokee man is teaching his grandson about life:

“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.

“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”

He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf will win?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
