You Are Always Teaching Yoga – by Heather Davidson

“You are always teaching yoga.” Ari says and my head snaps to attention. There it was, the secret. It summarizes what I love about the practice of yoga.

Yoga follows you. It follows you off the mat and into your life.

Yoga builds resilience, strength, determination, possibility and love.

Earlier this year, I joined the 40 Days to Personal Revolution group at Lumi. Towards the end of the program, I knew two things; one, I wanted to learn more about yoga and two, I wanted be around people that loved yoga as much as I did.

I cleared my work travel schedule and signed up for Lumi Teacher Training. It was one of the best decisions of my life.

The teacher training experience is awesome. It’s given me the power and the confidence to be. To be me. To be silly. To be messy. To be real. To be myself, more fully than I’ve ever been. It strips away all the layers of life that are tangled up around you like sheets on a Sunday lie in. And piece by piece your guard, your hardness, your fears are confronted and surrendered.

It’s an opportunity to give your mind and body positive attention. And the result is lightness of being. I feel lighter. And it’s not only the physical weight that I’ve lost during the process but the mental weight too. I’ve shed stones and ‘stories’. The pounds fell away easily while the ‘stories’, otherwise known as “the lies we tell ourselves”, took longer.

“I’m not good enough at yoga to teach yoga. I can’t even do wheel pose. Who will want to take a class from someone who can’t do wheel?”

You can remove the words “yoga” and “wheel” and replace them with any challenge. My instinct was to doubt my ability. To doubt myself. What I learned was that you’ll never progress if you don’t believe in yourself. The story that “I’m not good enough to teach yoga” is bulls%£*&. That way of thinking was holding me back. I am good enough. And guess what, I can do wheel. All I needed was 15 people to help me believe that I could.

Now, on to my next challenge, handstand.

I can’t do handstand….YET!

Thank you to Lumi Power Yoga staff and my awesome teacher trainees!
