Lumi Loves Lisa Hughes

Welcome to the Lumi Teaching Team, Lisa! Lisa teaches Lumi Restore on Sunday’s and throughout the week. We asked Lisa a few questions to find out more about her, and this is what she shared with us:

Lisa HughesWhat first brought you to the mat?

I came to yoga initially via a brief flirtation with Pilates – I just loved the feelings during and after any stretching practice. Pilates and then yoga provided me with a way to self-manage some chronic pain I have been dealing with for many years so I know I need it in my life. What struck me quickly about yoga is that it works on a much deeper level, physically, mentally and even emotionally.
It is a practice that just keeps on giving as there is always more to learn. Yoga has become a great passion of mine and a key part of my (almost) daily life.

Most embarrassing/awkward/funniest moment in a class?

In terms of teaching a class it has to be when I was doing my trial class at for Elina and co. at Lumi. I had gently and successfully talked them into Savasana accompanied by a chill-out track. However, my iPod  decided to have a mind and body of its own, and fell off the shelf landing on the floor. In the process it shuffled and rather loudly blared out Prodigy. Rather mortifying and not very relaxing, but luckily (for me) we all had a sense of humour about it – these things happen!

Who or what has been your greatest influence and why?

Without a doubt, my Mum. I think she’s had a fascinating life – growing up in Zimbabwe and Malawi, living and travelling in different countries, holding down many varied job roles during her working life whilst also being an amazing wife, mum and role model (and making it look easy). She’s taught me and my brother to be kind, hardworking and unbelievably loyal.

What’s your guiltiest pleasure?

I really don’t feel guilty about any of my greatest pleasures in life – what’s the point in wasting time feeling guilty about a pleasure? After all they are positive moments that should be enjoyed to the max!

Crow Pose or Revolving Triangle?

Definitely crow pose. I love the feeling of lightness and ease within the body as you lift up and take off, whilst maintaining a sense of strength within the core.

What’s the one piece of advice you would want the world to know?

I like reading inspirational (some might say cheesy) quotes and affirmations. Something I read recently really resonated with me – ‘This life is not a dress rehearsal’. Make the right choices to carve out the type of life you want to lead. And another firm favourite is the essence that ‘life is too short to spend time with people who suck the happiness out of you’. Surround yourself with people who make you feel good.
